While wine can be an enjoyable treat, it pays to be careful when drinking it. Spills can cause stains on carpets, upholstery and clothes and this is especially the case where red wine is concerned. The combination of a lighter colored item and red wine is not one that anyone wants to suffer as the resulting stain can be an annoyance. However there are a few remedies for wine stain removal and these can help to get your furnishings or clothes back looking like new.

Knocking over a glass of wine can be a frustrating experience and on softer furnishings such as sofas, armchairs, tablecloths and carpets it has the potential to cause a stain. While any wine can cause a problem, stains are more noticeable if red wine is involved. However there are a few methods that can be used for wine stain removal and these range from home made remedies to commercial products that can be purchased in stores.

One of the most important considerations with wine stain removal is to tackle the spill as soon as possible after it happens. Cleaning a stain before it has the chance to dry into fibers can make it easier to do and reduces the chances that the stain will be permanent. Generally the first thing to do is blot the stain with paper towels or a cloth as this will help to remove much of the wine while it is still wet. This will not remove all the wine but is a good start.

There are a few commercial products on the market which are effective at wine stain removal. One that gets good reviews is Wine Away by Oenophelia with an 8oz spray can costing around $9. This is effective at removing both fresh and set-in stains. Other products which can be effective on wine stains include Spot Shot by WD-40 which costs around $8 for a 22oz spray bottle and Shout Stain Remover by Johnson which costs around $12 for a 32oz container.

If you do not have commercial products to hand there are a few home remedies that are considered to work well for red wine stain removal. Simple table salt sprinkled on a wine spill while it is still wet has been shown to work. The salt crystals soak up the wine and if left overnight and then vacuumed in the morning when dry much of the wine will be removed. If the stain is still evident, wet it with club soda or warm water and repeat the process with the table salt, again vacuuming when dry.

There are many other home remedies available and with internet access a quick search should provide you with a range of ideas. Before using either commercial products or home remedies on your furnishings and clothes it is worth testing a small out of the way area. This can help to make sure the remedy will not cause any adverse reactions on furnishings or clothes before treating the stain.
